Between 1622 and 1625, Baroque artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini sculpted a life sized marble depiction of a scene from Ovid’s epic, ‘The Metamorphoses’. The story, taken from ancient Greek Mythology, has been examined as a battle between chastity (Daphne) and lust (Apollo). As Apollo lustfully pursues Daphne, she is saved through her metamorphosis into a laurel tree – an act of eternal chastity. Bernini’s masterpiece resides in the Galleria Borghese in Rome.
