Legendary Legacy (Visual Experience + Live Visuals)

Babekühl collaborated with Rizer and Tiffany & Co. to create a bespoke visual world for the Legendary Legacy Exhibition in Thailand, a showcase celebrating the extraordinary designs of Jean Schlumberger. Babekühl was tasked with crafting a multi-act projection experience inspired by the optical beauty of diamonds and the dynamic interplay between the elegance of uptown New York and the vibrant energy of modern Bangkok.

Concept

We have long held both a personal and artistic fascination with optical phenomena. There is an ephemeral timeless beauty to observe light as it passes through a substance or object such as rain, a glass prism or a diamond. The interplay of reflection and refraction is not only intellectually captivating but visually hypnotic, particularly in the case of diamonds.

During our early explorations, we were conceptually drawn to the nature of a diamond itself: its brilliance created through a choreography of light, endlessly reflecting, refracting, and dispersing into dazzling scintillation. While we had a clear outline of the show’s structure, we wanted the visual world we were building to echo these optical qualities, Aesthetically unifying the acts through this shared conceptual anchor.

Structure and Music

Working with a vast projection canvas beside uninterrupted city views, we developed a suite of bespoke visual environments structured as a semi-theatrical three-act sequence. Each act carried its own tone and pacing, unfolding in sync with both the show direction of Rizer and the distinct musical moments curated by music director Jono Ma.

Experimentation:

We began experimenting with a range of prismatic forms, using both rear- and front-projected imagery passed through or separated from the camera by layers of glass. This allowed us to bend and distort base visuals into soft, dreamlike abstractions with a distinctly optical character. Subtle hints or colour as light splintered momentarily into rainbows as a prism moved across frame.

Our overarching aim was to weave together the elegance of uptown New York with the electric energy of modern Bangkok. We drew inspiration from mid-century New York architecture, the graphic language of jazz record sleeves from the era, and a palette of collaged and kaleidoscoping visuals that tied these influences into a contemporary, cinematic whole.

Atmosphere and Performance

Motion was deliberately restrained and gradual. Slowly evolving textures, graphics and patterns allowed the visuals to sit within the environment atmospherically rather than drawing too much focus. The pacing followed the emotional arc of the music, starting slowly with elegance and gradually building energy and intensity as the evening unfolded. The scenes were rehearsed, sequenced and performed live on site.
